Shindig Festival - a great way to introduce your family to the festival scene!

April 5, 2019

Shindig Festival – perfect for party people with families.

Shindig, is a funky festival in the West, kick-startarting the summer on 23rd – 26th May at Gilcombe Farm, Bruton, Somerset. Bringing a packed programme of entertainment for all ages, Shindig Festival offers relaxation and revelry in equal measures. Awarded the ‘Best For Family

Raving’ accolade by Festival Kidz, this event is all about partying with your tribe! And, to top it all, children under 12 go free!

The Kids Kingdom is bursting with activities. Not only can they test their skills scaling

the climbing wall, learn to breakdance, rap ‘n rhyme or get very messy in the paint wars, they

can learn trapeze or hoop skills, from one of the best.

However if keeping their feet on the ground is more their thing, The Kings Of Ping will be

hosting a riotous Table Tennis Championship to the tunes of DJ Tofty. Ringworld will also be

bringing their massive inflatable playground, which is aimed at bigger kids to play and climb

on – definitely worth a pitstop over the weekend. Also in the mix - the Aardman Model Making

workshop where budding creatives can learn how to make their very own Wallace or Gromit

from the very people that created them.

The Flying Seagull Project , world famous for spreading smiles to children far and wide, will be

creating wonderful shows from scratch: the ideas, characters, costumes and props will be

woven into stories and performed for us at Shindig.  Amazing amounts of fun from a troupe of

people that give joy to children in all kinds of situations plus a chance to learn

from professional clowns and theatrical performers before a live audience filled with family

and friends.

There are lots of places to chill out, grab some lunch or an ice-cream and check out the

workshops and shows.  From costume design to graffiti, from circus to jewellery, costume,

pompom or badge making… there is plenty to get stuck into and try out new skills!

Little Kids

The smallies will have their own area with soft play and space to chill out with activities and

littl’un approved games so they don’t get squashed.  There will be places to get food and drinks

nearby as well as secure space for prams to park up so everyone can enjoy the activities across

the weekend and even catch a nap or two between games!

Teens

Teens can hang out without too much interference from grown ups at The Mayflower

Project which goes to festivals all over the country. It provides what young people need – a

chilled, comfortable, easy-going space.  There is a stage and drum kit if they want to make

music, sofas to hang out on and workshops if they feel creative, but no one has to do anything:

it’s safe, it’s fun and just for teenagers – come and meet friends, make friends or just chill.

Junior Jungle will be providing the Sunday soundtrack as well as shows including Feminist

Mouse Circus, Suitcase Theatre and Clarence the Bull – all guaranteed to put a smile on all

faces.   Not forgetting the Procession on Sunday at 4pm, costumes and headdresses at the ready!

It’s majestic and a highlight of the weekend for everyone – big and small!

And the fancy dress theme this year? It’s a peach! The theme is “Get Fruity”. After all life is a

bowl of cherries at Shindig. So assemble your berries, bananas and buddies. We also have a

different Bedtime Family Movie every night to relax, get the jammies on, bring the duvet and

settle down on the cushions.

Live Line Up

Estelle, Queen of British hip hop, will play her only UK festival show of 2019. GRAMMY-award

winning, LA six piece, Ozomatli are set to steal the show with their uplifting party tunes and

crowd-pleasing routines. Plus the baritone bass of Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na will be a dead cert

Sunday highlight. Unifying the live line up: The Herbaliser who will be bringing their

cinematic, all encompassing show and Crazy P with their underground disco, electro beats and

pop sound.

DJ Line Up

Whilst live music is the soul of Shindig, the DJ sets are the beating heart. Kenny “DOPE” will

wow the crowds and get everyone dancing along with the Rebel Dread and BBC 6Music DJ - Don Letts who will be bringing his sonic culture-clash ethic to the party. Fun Lovin’ Criminal and DJ Huey Morgan is set to throw down a massive NYC-style block party. Not forgetting DJ Nu-

Mark, stellar hip-hop producer and founding member of Jurassic 5. Shindig stalwarts, LTJ

Bukem, Stanton Warriors and A Skillz will keep the Ghetto Funk spirit alive by spreading the

requisite sonic whomp throughout the weekend.

Eight Themed Areas

As ever, music is just one part of the programme. Shindig Festival wouldn’t be complete without

the myriad of talent that comprises the other facets of the festival experience. There are no

main stages, just a beautiful arrangement of stretch marquees and stylish venues.

Over at the SS Nautylicious, Interstellar will present cutting-edge circus and cabaret. And

Shindig wouldn’t be the same without the incredible high wire spectacular from the Bullzini

family.

Comedy

Big hitters Terry Alderton and Andrew Maxwell will take to the stage on Sunday. Terry’s

trademark tic is to discuss his show's progress with the voices inside his head. This is seat-of-

its-pants standup that takes risks, hurtling off in unexpected directions while decorum struggles

to keep up. Andrew offers state-of-the-nation comedy; this is a man for whom news fires his

belly. Described as a “voice of sanity when it comes to British politics and one of the finest

comics around on the subject”.

Tickets

And the best bit: this isn’t going to cost a fortune. Adult tickets are now £130 and children

under 12 go free, Teen (13-17) tickets are £75. Paying in instalments is possible too. All can be

bought from: www.shindigfestival.co.uk

Shindig is a small festival with a big soul.
